Mould growth in a car is relatively rare. It occurs when there is a constant build-up of moisture. To avoid mould regrowth, follow these tips:

• Avoid eating or drinking in your car and clean up any spills.
• Always dry your dog before they enter the car or place a towel down.
• Inspect your vehicle for signs of leaking.
• Leave the window down when driving sometimes to improve ventilation.
• Place wet or damp clothing, shoes, or umbrellas in a plastic bag.
• Don’t leave a vehicle closed up for long periods without airflow.

Mould grows in humid, damp environments. We typically see mould growth in places like bathrooms, where there is limited ventilation. Cars are less likely to be affected as the ventilation is usually very good.

There are a few exceptions, including:

• Spilt drinks or food left uncleaned
• Wet clothes or umbrellas stored in the car
• Leaking windows, doors, or sunroofs
• Blocked drainage channels
• Condensation from poor ventilation
• Transporting pets
• Rarely used, sealed vehicles

Always try to find the underlying cause of the mould. Be sure to identify and fix the source of moisture; otherwise, the mould will likely return within weeks.

 Yes. Mould is spread by airborne spores. If the mould is left inside the car, anything that enters the car will become contaminated. That includes soft items like clothing, bags, or child seats. You can then bring these spores into your home, increasing the risk of mould growth.
